Why is Propublica doing all this work when it is such an obvious thing to check for? Facebook externalizes costs of its business model in so many ways. (They should donate large, large sums to Propublica along with the standard “oh, sorry!”)https://twitter.com/propublica/status/943675658290565121 …

We reported that Facebook accepted ads targeting “Jew-haters.” We reported that Facebook accepted housing ads that discriminated by race, gender & other factors. Today, we’re reporting that Facebook has also been accepting employment ads targeted by age: http://propub.li/2BboSfy

But Facebook defends age-targeting of employment ads — both in its position as a publishing platform but also as a recruiter itself — when it is “used responsibly." It’s an assessed and accepted risk. They don’t see the low risk and size of federal penalties as something to spend money to mitigate. They don’t even see the inevitable shame of sunlight as something to be concerned about. This is the way of the world.

Because Facebook is and has always been a targeted sociopathic data mine. Zuckerburg is incapable of caring whether people are harmed via his cash cow. And the planet just keeps on giving.

Isn't it the responsibility of the advertiser not the medium not to discriminate by age? If it were a direct mail campaign would you fault post office? (Question not opinion)

I think that’s why the lawsuit is against advertisers who used FB to age discriminate and so it stands to reason FB becomes economically incentivized to re-engineer certain targeting and ad review to make advertisers feel more shielded from litigation risks.
