Also, rest of the argument is flimsy! The best version of that argument would be: the apparatus for heavily policing the boundary between "gays are evil" (hate speech) and controversial topics ("is homosexuality born or acquired") puts undue pressure on free speech & thought.

But the assertion that somehow, China is freer for speech and thought speaks volumes to what is missing in the "free speech" side of this debate. Sure, it is probably easier to say "gays are evil" in China. Next time, please try discussing Liu Xiaobo!

There are certain controversial ideas easier discussed in China than SF yeah but has more to do with different moral background than institutional background.
