I had an aunt who wouldn't let her kids on airplanes because they crash sometimes, but would let them on trains and in cars. Humans are terrible at judging relative risk.

YES! The bigger the emotional response elicited by an event the more likely the availability bias will kick in. The mind then opens a transderivational search for other similar events which, in turn, increases the bias. and this circular pattern continues until interrupted.
