That’s the attention dilemma. We pay attention to the rare, to the novel, to the “spectacle” rather than the mundane no matter how important. It doesn’t mean that the rare is not attention-worthy, but hard to have a reasonable publilc conversation with all these nuances.

This is a general issue with US society. Low compassion for those affected by things they can't visualise. Tipping culture (tipper gets gratification) vs decent min wage.

Underfunded in general, but this is a new line, modified to get it off of a busy freight line. Route is also heavily subsidized. Too early to draw conclusions.

It may sound simplistic and conspiratorial but I'm thinking the gas and the auto industries have a lot to do with the lack of USA having railway networks crisscrossing the country.
