Another reminder of the dangers of the sprawling commercial spyware market, of which human rights defenders are often targets. Glad we are improving EU laws soon https://citizenlab.ca/2017/12/champing-cyberbit-ethiopian-dissidents-targeted-commercial-spyware/ …

This is why tools like safer anonymous operating systems such as @Tails_live and @torproject and hidden services encrypted email are such important tools for activists and journalists. Something to ponder @zeynep

How about a real answer, rather than a non-answer?

The real answer is don’t tell activists TOR will protect them from spyware. TOR does something different and misleading dissidents about what tool protects what from what can endanger them.

It's interesting how you missed the bit about safer anonymous operating systems of which Tor is, in fact, only one ingredient, but an essential one. Email services that don't have an onion have obvious drawbacks ;-)

I’m actually all for such operating systems but haven’t ever managed to get past the usability issue for ordinary, not tech, activists. Not for lack of trying. If anyone manages, yeay, and would love to hear how.

Well, aside from @Tails_live, by all means here is one you can try on a spare lap top. It's a step-by-step instruction for the novice for a safer anonymous operating system. http://anonguide.cyberguerrilla.org  Good point to learn from & feedback encouraged by the author.

The people I encounter are lost 100% after they read “enable a “BIOS Compatibility Mode” setting if your computer uses UEFI instead of BIOS.” on the first page of that instructions for the “novice.”

Usability is such a giant barrier atm. :-(

People who are looking for something they can just turn on without having to learn anything new are not looking for usability - they are looking to maintain a limited state of knowledge. A little effort never hurt anyone.

I assure you that guide is suitable for beginners & the author has been known to trouble themselves to help people who get stuck. Learning is worth taking the trouble and intial panic at the unfamiliar isn't the same as being lost. 🙃
