This morning's musical rabbit hole ended with me learning that the amazing Anouar Brahem dedicated his 2014 album, Souvenance, to the Arab Spring. (Grateful to the recommender!). "Deliverance":https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IkGM0BR9KYI …

So TIL that Farian did the intro percussive riff to Daddy Cool by tapping on his teeth with a pencil. https://www.revolvy.com/main/index.php?s=Daddy%20Cool%20(single)&item_type=topic … (My fave of this genre remains Buckingham credit for playing a "Kleenex box" in Tusk.)

I love these details so much. You know the huge echo on the snare in Simon & Garfunkel ‘The Boxer’? They tied the drum round the poor drummer’s neck and dangled him over the highest lift-shaft they could find in NYC.

Oh shit looks like the version id heard was an exaggeration though the real story is hilarious in its own waypic.twitter.com/Gwmzlr9eJK

Similarly, the drum sound on Led Zeppelin's When The Levee Breaks was obtained by placing John Bonham & his kit at the bottom of a three-storey stairwell and the microphones at the top.

Another: Small Hours by John Martyn was apparently recorded overnight at Chris Blackerll’s mansion (while hammering the opium). At dawn it was perfectly still so they set up massive speakers on one side of a lake, mic on the other, and played the recording across it.
