I don’t oppose profiles or reporting. Dynamics that attempt to normalize fascism *should* be studied. But I’ve read more informative pieces in the NYT weddings section.

People shouldn’t oppose profiles/study in general. One thing that helped me take Trump seriously, before the election, when everyone was laughing, is that I read almost every such piece I find, plus I seek the info. Informed is more powerful.

I even like the idea—show the rising normalcy of one strain of fascism. I don't need a condemnatory statement every other sentence either. So the guy belongs to a very tiny fascist party. TELL ME MORE HOW HE GOT THERE. Put in the social structure and dynamics. That's missing.

If it were that simple, the world wouldn't have burnt down in WWII. If anyone thinks there was a shortage of people willing to punch Nazis before the 1940s, they don't know a thing about history, or fascism, or how to defeat it. Ignorance is dangerous.https://twitter.com/SedentAdvis/status/934597254693863424 …

Wow, the author knows he didn't get to the real questions. So he calls the guy on the phone and gives up? Profiles are valuable, but not if they are less informative about the subject than a median piece in the NYT weddings section. https://twitter.com/mnot/status/934603614516953089 …pic.twitter.com/06unFvcmzz

Yep! Hard to imagine, but obviously possible. An editor was like, really? That's all you got? And that's all he got.https://twitter.com/Pinboard/status/934607462598107136 …

This is core. Absolutely agree with
@willsommer's point. This is a beat. A crucial beat. It's not to be taken lightly. https://twitter.com/aaronhuertas/status/934608053713932288 …zeynep tufekci added,

He hit a wall interviewing that one guy. Okay, do other types of reporting or profile someone else. The only real use of a profile is if the person is a stand-in for a deeper understanding of the movement, and tells us about the movement. Not this one.https://twitter.com/sparky_005/status/934608849905917952 …

Yeah, jumped at me that this was an obvious potential path, not explored at all. Can't be a reporter of modern fascism if you don't understand this dynamic. Profiled guy clearly wasn't about the books he rattled off (bet he hadn't read them).https://twitter.com/GoodmanHarrison/status/934552743179583490 …

Yep. One of many paths of inquiry that just weren't followed, resulting in an uninformative, pointless piece. https://twitter.com/aaronhuertas/status/934613561585885184 …

Yep, the emergent libertarian/white supremacists nexus is fascinating, important, crucial. Fascism is a beat, should be covered by competent, informed reporters who have it as a beat. Problem isn't profiling Nazis, it is doing it poorly.https://twitter.com/estarianne/status/934790443773992960 …

This is the commentary that makes me feel justified and a little pissed. I’ve been talking about this nexus for about 8 yrs. Distinctly remember bringing it up as a TA in a Nazi Germany course during my doctoral candidacy and the prof didn’t get it. Some of the students did.

The way I see it, libertarianism focuses on property rights, especially land rights, and maintaining the wealth gap. It's really 100% about propagating the system of privilege
