If I had written my op-ed for an academic audience, it would have encouraged the many scholars focused on algorithmic accountability from disparate disciplines to organize, within academia, and to fight for resources.

Right now there's lots of work being done but the voice is not united, and in particular is not being heard over the much louder, better resourced voice of big tech lobbying.

I went to a congressional subcommittee meeting a few years ago. The three people talking to congress members were all lobbyists. I said to myself, there should be a critic here, with a voice that is heard. That's an opinion I still hold.

My hope is that academics can organize their critical thoughts, if they work together, and if they focus on impact and on using a language that gets through to policy makers. It's urgent and critical.

So, how do we organize? How do we make the work of scholars something that can be heard as effectively as the big data hype machine? It's a challenge that I hope we're up to. But we're not there yet, not even close.

You undersell what’s working. Folks like @zeynep are having big impact. Prioritize helping best communicators get regular columns in nyt/@techcrunch/etc. One engaging writer > consolidated blob of boring. (this is my wheelhouse, happy to help)

Thanks. Though I am very open: I couldn't in a million years do what I do without the work of all the scholars in the field... On whose behalf I am objecting to Cathy's oped. I see them try everything she suggests everyday.

Hear hear. Issue isn’t lack of effort, it's getting through to an audience that often doesn’t want to hear it. Those who effectively spread others’ work should be celebrated not marginalized. (👏) (for my part I'd like to do what Jon Stewart did for politics, for this stuff)

"Nobody is doing this" when so many are trying isn't a way to get attention or support to anyone. Anyway, just the social media response shows how many are *out there* in the public, trying. I've been trying for years, with much support from within academia.
