If I had written my op-ed for an academic audience, it would have encouraged the many scholars focused on algorithmic accountability from disparate disciplines to organize, within academia, and to fight for resources.

This is also a discipline where there tend to be a lot of women and minorities producing research. I wouldn't want to suggest that the reason marginalized voices aren't heard is because they're not trying hard enough to shout louder.

The people whose work I see everyday don't need encouragement. They need political support and resources--which starts by acknowledging they exist. The obstacles against critical and empirical scholarship in this area are DELIBERATE.
