Because they’re “asleep at the wheel”? No that’s not unsubtle or simplified, it’s reality turned at its head. It’s not a generalization, it’s wrong. I write opeds, too, well aware of the challenges of the medium

Riffing off @andresmh's comment, it's like observing sea levels are rising and weather patterns are becoming more extreme and asking that scientists write a big report summarizing all this evidence so policymakers will pay attention to this "new" problem.
