I'm afraid I disagree pretty strongly with this. Sure, it could be even better! I wish we had more people doing this, more funding, etc. But there are too many of us working in this space to suggest we're asleep at the wheel. Actually, Information Science as a discipline does this really well. True, it's not the ENTIRE discipline, any more than CS theory is its own discipline. But I can name many fantastic information science faculty who research and teach in this exact area, yay!

And we might not be specifically devoted to algorithms, but I'm feeling pretty heartened about the state of computer science academia + ethics, since
@NSF just gave@pervade_team $3 million. I feel like the ivory tower is stepping up!4 replies 0 retweets 13 likesShow this thread -
Here are just a few other technology+ethics folks in CS and information science depts off the top of my head:

I'm not getting why everyone hates this op-ed. It seems 100% right on. Tweeps are naming specific people/conferences/things that
@mathbabedotorg didn't mention -- this just cements the point that these people + "critique" of algorithmic anything is not central to the university.2 replies 0 retweets 6 likes -
.
@mathbabedotorg gave us a big gift here. I can forward this to administrators and say "SEE?!" // Do ppl prefer that she wrote an op-ed titled "(YOUR NAME HERE or@AINowInstitute ETC.) is doing great work already!" That seems a lot less useful. And less plausible as an op-ed.1 reply 0 retweets 0 likes -
I would have preferred that it acknowledged the work being done, rather than suggesting no one's trying. And to ALSO talk about the institutional challenges we face - not enough funding, not being listened to, etc. The op-ed makes it seem like academics don't care enough. :(

Riffing off
@andresmh's comment, it's like observing sea levels are rising and weather patterns are becoming more extreme and asking that scientists write a big report summarizing all this evidence so policymakers will pay attention to this "new" problem.3 replies 1 retweet 10 likes
Heh, best summary of what's exactly what's wrong with the analysis in this oped. There is an enormous effort to do just this (and bring more people and create more institutes etc.), and huge political/money opposition to the project. The op-ed has it just about 100% backward.
