So job training programs turn out to be subsidies to the education sector (where I work!) and a way to distribute hope and keep busy for the displaced. Doesn't lead to jobs. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I honestly appreciate all good intentions but a lot of this stuff has been studied to death by social scientists, and this isn't our first rodeo with job displacement.

No, not really. Moving is a bigger problem than just expenses (people aren't cogs; they have lives and communities) but it is mainly the job supply.https://twitter.com/markemer/status/928300553951735808 …

Is one of the reasons the fact that often times people don’t live where the jobs are? Moving is expensive.

True! It is the feel good soundbite, from politicians to apparently, now, leading AI researchers. By itself, it does not work, has not ever worked—for structural reasons. https://twitter.com/I_R_D_G_A_F_2/status/928301949195309056 …

There is indeed a substantial body of research on displaced workers and job training. Book form from 2004: https://www.amazon.com/Training-Charade-Collection-Technology-Work/dp/0801489512 …. Recent research also coherent, unified on the point. https://twitter.com/jongabriel/status/928301871877509120 …

First, let's get real. This is perfectly addressable *if* we get real. We need job *creation* (obvious: infrastructure & care); make those jobs pay well; narrowly targeted training for some, safety net for some; and make tech and others pay up their taxes.https://twitter.com/neelyandrew/status/928306596190371840 …

Not against any such programs, but will have close to no impact on the displaced worker population. Good for otherwise already advantaged people.https://twitter.com/clofresh/status/928307818855198720 …

Need to address: taxation, off-shore havens, global capital flows, job creation in what sectors, priorities (good jobs in infrastructure and care, for example), safety net, etc. in great length before phrase "job training" is uttered. And taxation.https://twitter.com/scottfromsf/status/928308965565485057 …

There are much potential jobs in infrastructure (re)building for such populations. No point in talking training without creating such jobs and paying well—hence taxation.https://twitter.com/Carnage4Life/status/928313557220966401 …

How does collecting more taxes creates jobs for displaced coal miners who used make $50K/year if job retraining doesn’t work?

Also, see today’s painful @politico profile of Chump’s chumps in western PA. The target audience doesn’t want any opportunity but going back in the mines. (Note this audience slurs other welfare recipients as “lazy” and undeserving.) Change is scary and off-putting.
