At the local level, speak up & complain to get cable news (esp Fox) out of public places: hotels, restaurants, airports, doctor's offices, etc.

1) Move away from teaching the idea that journalism is/can be/should be unbiased or objective 2) Teach people to identify and understand bias/perspective present in absolutely all reporting

Still, they have to have the information. With no common facts or information base, you are left with asking for critical thinking about major things half the population may not even know is happening.
