Saying that Facebook controls what’s in the newsfeed is really no more correct than saying Google controls what’s in search results.

Not complaining. I'm saying the options available and methods/metrics of "what people want" and what answers you get are inseparably linked.

Ads are a hybrid category in Facebook, they blend into social dynamics because of UX and sharing/commenting so it's all feed—including ads.
