I agree that, for now, the work is more informative than consequential. I can also say that witnesses expressed thanks for laying out events

I think you could have provided all that with a lot less detail on method--there is a reason CDC asks no excessive details of suicides.

At this point, mass shootings and some forms of terrorism clearly follow the same pattern--and their causes are pretty structural.

I'm marshaling research but... I've had survivors thank me for my (seems futile) work on role of excessive attention on shooters & methods.

Like @Zeynep I have regularly expressed deep concern about excessive detail and sensationalism in reporting on mass shootings and terrorism.

But I have also worked (with @malachybrowne at times) on teaching students and newsrooms how to use eyewitness media and info forensics.

I found the thread profoundly useful as an example of tools and skills other newsrooms can and should employ, and shared it in that spirit.

And because I’m very interested in the role of transparency on trust I appreciated @malachybrowne sharing the how behind the reporting.

NYT reporting of this contained every thing experts have been warning about for years, sadly. Very talented, hardworking reporters for sure.

Multiple profiles of the killer—it was like all previous ones: who knew expect troubled person, guns & attention. Excessive method details.
