Some journos pushing the "Trump pivoted/is independent" line because they're more interested in creating narrative (needs pivots) than news.

This is a huge problem. Narrative is more interesting (clicks), and seems too many journalists would like to write novels more than news.

This was a big problem before the 2016 election (false narrative turns & minor gossip buried real news). It continues. Not learned lessons.

It's been an issue with the news media for about 150 years though hasn't it? Not sure a lesson learned is in the offing.

Yes. Not new at all; ability to measure story traffic click by click plus the opportunity to gossip and banter on Twitter exacerbates it.
