Some journos pushing the "Trump pivoted/is independent" line because they're more interested in creating narrative (needs pivots) than news.

"news" used to be viewed as a public good. Not a profit center. Rewatch movies Network & Broadcast News in 2017. They age well.

Totally agree, though I would note, takes two to tango, and audience demand for the stories helps feed it. Still, press could resist more.
