Some journos pushing the "Trump pivoted/is independent" line because they're more interested in creating narrative (needs pivots) than news.

This was a big problem before the 2016 election (false narrative turns & minor gossip buried real news). It continues. Not learned lessons.

Before the election media thought Clinton was going to win, so created "story" accordingly and did a bad job covering both candidates.
