This paper is kinda misleading. Most of the % reported are "how often did it place the key point with d=[5,10,20] pixels of correct?"

I dont know how that translates into correctly matching a person in a crowd to, say their photo on file at DMV

When they do "can it ID the right person" they actually do "is it most similar to the correct person or one of these other 4"

And all of this they have 2000 images of 25 people. Randomly use 1000 to train. It almost surely saw all of the test people in training

Yeah, I note in the newsletter that the dataset is very, very small and that some of the methods are pretty juvenile 1/2

However, research like this seems like a taste of things to come, and illustrative of how lots of people will build surveillance AI systems

Yep. I noted the weaknesses of the paper but ... this is just the beginning and the issue is the direction and rapidly growing capabilities.

Gait/walk is almost certainly pretty identifying. Enough data plus ML methods is making anonymity into an impractical assumption.

It's not even peer reviewed and is a conference paper. I'd be somewhat skeptical of the claims.

Workshop, not conference. Many conferences in ML/CV are high quality, peer reviewed venues. Workshops are high variance in review level
