Reupping thread. After every disaster we see "looting" stories. Almost all are either justifiable (feed people!) or false or extremely rare.https://twitter.com/zeynep/status/901837155949043714 …

Is there no malicious behavior after disasters? There is but rare. Research says most people become *more* altruistic—at least for a while.

In fact, research shows the problem is often authorities assuming bad behavior & becoming harsh—rather than helping people help themselves.

Did you know? Superdome folk were mostly heroic after Katrina—but police were convicted of shooting at black people trying to escape flood.

Death rate at the Superdome was remarkably low—esp. as many elderly & ill were there. Obvious that people performed miracles of solidarity.

However, unarmed black ppl trying to escape waters were killed by police officers as they tried to cross a bridge into a mostly white town.

What did we hear at the time, though? We heard the opposite of truth: that the (mostly black) residents were all looting and raping etc.

Don't mean to say there are no instances of horrible behavior in the aftermath of disasters. But they overwhelming reality is the opposite.

This sure altruism and solidarity, however, cannot last if there isn't proper investment in helping the place recover. So that is true.

Here's what actually common: people who step up like this. (The horrible part is how little this woman is paid!) https://twitter.com/lamthuyvo/status/903076275035795456 …
