He wrote things that, frankly, were not very smart—but commonly believed. I'd prefer to treat it as an opportunity to fully air the problem.
I think firing him allows for the problem to be fully aired without negatively impacting women/POC who would have had to work with him.
The lone gunman issue? People would rather think that the issue is one bad apple, than systemic?
So much this. If he were in management, I'd feel differently.
I have great sympathy with this point of view but can’t imagine a path that doesn’t turn this into a worse/more harmful shit show.
It solves Google's specific problem, which is why they did it. They don't need to keep him around so the rest of us can have a dialogue
It's not about punishing him tbh. Coworkers resent that guy now. He unfortunately would make any team dysfunctional.
He demonstrated he doesn't understand consequences and somehow missed countless opportunities to learn from others.
Not hard to imagine the manifesto significantly impacting his ability to work with other people in the company...
Not commenting on "deserve", but that's not the only concern. He's now dramatically less valuable as an employee due to team risk.
