No-one's ever been able to convince me of good practical reasons why the US couldn't use something like UK's pencil and paper system.

It certainly can be done--New York City uses optical scan mark paper ballots--but remember that US ballots are far longer.

All computers can be hacked, but you can audit a sample of the paper ballots and even recount them by hand if necessary.
