When interviewed on AI & driving, people ask me the "making moral decisions on crashes/trolley problem". That's a small/non-dilemma issue.

As someone who's worked on self driving cars, the reason these questions drive me nuts is they're so totally divorced from how the cars work

The question is like, "there is an obstacle, should you swerve off a cliff to the left, or swerve right into an oncoming car w/1 passenger"

And this is ridiculous because the car sensor does not and cannot know (1) that there is a cliff to the left (2) oncoming car passenger #

The car will *probably* know that there is an obstruction in its *own* lane, but will only know this with a % certainty

So no car will EVER swerve, only autobrake, because it lacks a huge amount of information necessary to make a judgement about swerving

Even the autobrake-on-obstacle systems that are in cars *now* are *extremely* conservative, bc if sensors are wrong, braking is dangerous

Yeah, that makes sense, and also humans swerve all the time in nutty ways. AI cars bring huge issues, but this is a minor minor one.

In actual self driving car design things like "does existence of ADAS cause driver to pay less attention to the road" are much bigger fears

If your AI car does something better than "panic and freeze up" in the middle of a crash it's an improvment.
