I got a similar relationship with trains, except, well, more I know, the less confident I'm in overall.

Commercial airlines are well-regulated, with a very sane procedure for fixing stuff: no blame dissection of each failure.

I've had my share of "oh, no" at airports but something oddly liberating to know that competent *other* people are in charge of risk etc.

This is weird but when i look around & see everybody miserable part of me goes "i'm happier than everyone else here" in a self-satisfied way

Even better, people in charge of risk and stuff that matters are competent, well-rested by regulation and such. So I read my books.

yep... Rich people fly; it doesn't get messed with. Front of plane may have bigger seats but till at 36K feet with rest of us.

also, public fear of flying safety pushes airlines to need safety. to avoid competitive breakout, regulations keeps level playing field.
