Georgia voting machines are Window 2000 (basically, ancient and all the insecurity that goes with it) and no paper trail, no audit possible.https://twitter.com/KimZetter/status/875017554456174592 …

Also: I've been writing about crappy election infrastructure for years because experts have been warning for years. https://www.nytimes.com/2016/08/14/opinion/campaign-stops/the-election-wont-be-rigged-but-it-could-be-hacked.html …pic.twitter.com/w1m9qidiQZ

Computer people say "technical debt" for stuff you needed to have fixed, coming to bite you. 2016: US had democracy and infrastructure debt.

Honestly, the experts in these fields have been screaming for years. There is very little new here except ... things finally became visible.

There is actually a perfectly sane, efficient & secure way for election tallying: optical scan paper ballots with random audits. That's it.

Like many other infosec issues, combination of snake-oil sellers, patronage, non-expert buyers & gov't indifference has left us vulnerable.

Systemic problems require systemic solutions, but that takes gov leadership, which is either absent or actively stymied for narrow reasons!

Here in Canada, it's pretty low-tech, AFAIK. Paper & pencil ballots, counted by election officials & representatives from each party.

Certainly the simpler the better. I would go further and suggest that all code MUSt be open sourced to allow public scrutiny
