Not everything I write stands up to time—fine and inevitable given complexity of current moment. But I stand by every word of that piece.
I learned this from my hiker/climber friends. Respect the mountain. Respect the ocean. Have a healthy fear. Same with history and power.
Overselling the effectiveness is also destructive as it distorts strategy and policy. I have a hunch this happened in the Clinton campaign.
All due respect, but essentially you're saying "the data are wrong but the conclusion is right." Not exactly firm footing.
