The resources necessary to determine what *would* work would be substantial.

And as long as major conferences gladly publish incremental updates to https://www.usenix.org/conference/8th-usenix-security-symposium/why-johnny-cant-encrypt-usability-evaluation-pgp-50 …, those resources will never be allocated.

Really? How do you figure? I don't see how this work deincentivizes the harder work.

If writing up Topic A takes X hours to research, and writing up Topic B takes N * X hours to research, and venues will always publish (1/2)

... retreads of Topic A, who's going to put in the time to write up Topic B when they could have N Topic A papers in their CV instead? (2/2)

If the assumption is that the only incentive to produce academic research is self-serving, then the answer is 'no one'.

Kindly don't put assumptions in my mouth. "Academics who don't publish don't get tenure" is a bound on the effectiveness of the system.

How else would you interpret that? You're implying tenure and the shortest path to getting published are the primary incentives, right?

Primary != only. If you're going to flip back and forth between the two as is convenient for you, then I have better things to do w/my day.

You're speaking in absolutes (always/never/don't), and I'm finding it hard to believe that other incentives don't exist
