Having tried for yrs to get people to adopt secure things, I'm over the moon about this paper. The people I need to get through are techies.

Most people designing security have so little understanding of how people behave that things don't get better. I hope eye-opening will help.

Would it not be better to give implementors proof-of-concepts of what does work, rather than leave them floundering in the dark?

Can't that be future work?

Exactly! The more we map this gap, the better future work can be... Or so I hope.

I do! I have tons of design suggestions. Tons in concrete wishlists. Problem is the platform hunger to capture user data interferes.

I have been in this space for years... I always have suggestions, and believe it or not, I do spell them out to anyone who will listen.

I teach security keys. I have been lobbying Google through every channel I know to fix its unusable help pages for security keys. Months.

Somehow, one of worlds richest companies cannot fix unusable help pages, or add screenshots. So we wrote our own. https://techsolidarity.org/resources/security_key_gmail.htm …

The level of disconnect between what users need (in design, in explanation, in instruction) and what is provided is appalling.

I can give you example after example like this. Some of the problems are really hard. (Account recovery vs security; key transparency).
