Arguing it's not Microsoft's problem to maintain XP security is not the same but on the same side of history as arguing against seat belts.
Our approach to security is failing; internet of things is going to fail even worse (not even means to update). Have to change all this.
People arguing "many to blame and the whole ecology is messed up!" I agree. I wrote that. Piece focuses on what few big players should do.
And Microsoft's EXTRA cash hoard of $100 billion isn't irrelevant. It's partly there because we let software be sold "as is", no liability.

That money is sitting around, idling offshore, while the economy of India may fail because of XP in ATMs crisis.https://twitter.com/AskAnshul/status/863654307219988481 …
zeynep tufekci added,
Microsoft better about security recently and is best positioned to lead fixing a chunk of this problem. And everyone has to change approach.

I agree we should get people off XP as fast as we can. I wrote that. Just this way of "let them sink" isn't working.https://twitter.com/DeusExNovo/status/863740551849545728 …

The way enterprises approach IT security is ALSO not working. Agree with pushing there too. The ecology failing.https://twitter.com/gvwilson/status/863741226595610624 …

"End-of-life" as decided by MS. Look, software is part of world. World life-cycle and software have to match better.https://twitter.com/DeusExNovo/status/863742469724393472 …
zeynep tufekci added,
Also! New variants of the ransomware that hit Britain. If you work anywhere that runs XP, ask *now* if it's patched. Ask your IT. Patch.

This has been said about every safety feature we ever got. By this logic: no seat belts, lead paint everywhere.https://twitter.com/xmaccabix/status/863744644198346752 …
