B/c company cannot be held hostage to your whims when you previously agreed to contract clearly spelling out the extend of their warranty.

Microsoft makes XP patches for "extended support" customers. Unless x-supp fees >$10G/year, they could give 'em away & still make a profit.
If they continued support for those older versions it would remove a final, important motivator to change, & would make things less secure.
There are more situations than are reasonable where EOL is the last and final thing that can be used to cause an upgrade. And it works.
