Signal could raise the money if it surrendered to VC rules—which would almost certainly require a "business model" because it's not Juicero.

I'm not a fan of many companies that get funding, but you're assuming the biz model choice is arbitrary and could easily be different.

Signal needs to be funded, just because. It shouldn't be a business per se. It is very very very lean, except for the SMS fees.

I think it's a good bit more than SMS fees. They could look to non profits, but ultimately they will need a sustainability model.

Agree. I think it will be much easier to reach sustainability if they can become a bit more mass-based. (I envision a NPR model for them).
