Been saying this for a few years. The sooner the news media moves away from ad-financing, the better. But subscribers should demand better!

This is from my January talk. I think subscribers should be active in demanding high standards—locally & nationally.https://twitter.com/garthurabbott/status/821758367404326912 …

PS. My issue isn't difference of opinion. NYT opinion can hire ppl with views rarely seen in their pages. Hire
@tressiemcphd, for example.

Climate change denying, anti-science men who write predictably false stuff aren't short of top publications who'll let them go blah blah.

Meanwhile, there is a crisis of representation of a range of views. And yes, some I don't always agree with, including some conservatives.

NYT does some of the best journalism, makes sense for subscribers to ask why they'd give a non-fact-checked column to an anti-science guy.

Especially since this is not an outlier issue. The fact-lite "on the other hand" approach has contributed to the media disaster of 2016.

If you add million+ subscribers with the slogan "truth matters more than ever", you shld be worried if there's no backlash to this.¯\_(ツ)_/¯

People miss the backlash isn't to one column. It's that this was a 2017 hire with tenure to write with no fact-checking. Many years of this.

All sorts of stuff gets published in opinion all the time. That's fine. It's the hire—after all that 2016 was—that drew people's ire.

NYT is, wisely, trying to move to a subscriber model. That means something: subscribers can and should demand quality—even in disagreement.

Clinton camp got blinded by "data" is a great point to make (I made this a lot
), tying this to climate change science is... meh. mediocre.3 replies 3 retweets 24 likes -

This is the most irritating thing to me. They're acting like the column brings "intellectual diversity" when it's just the same old dreck.
