What's striking is sneakiness: geo-fencing Apple to not be found out; how the engineers went along with all this. What else would they do?

I worked at Google in 2011... at that time geofencing Google's IPs/Googlebot was common measure used by spammers/hackers.

Well, there is that. Apple is such a strong gatekeeper, with, indeed, a stranglehold. Cook prime may not always be privacy-conscious.
