Here's the FAA "safety alert" from last year. Now, these batteries will all go into cargo area, unattended. https://www.faa.gov/other_visit/aviation_industry/airline_operators/airline_safety/safo/all_safos/media/2015/safo15010.pdf …pic.twitter.com/d5uVC83Vqw

Most charitable reading is there is a credible threat of assembling a bomb out of lithium ion + laptop components—requiring universal ban.

Also, a kindle e-reader has a 750 mAh battery. An iPhone 7s Plus has a 2900 mAh battery. The former is banned, the latter is not.

A very good question. As worded, you can carry those on... One of those can be two iPads, each of which are banned.https://twitter.com/jeremyzimmer/status/844218250963517440 …

UK version bans by dimension, not battery—bans e-readers with tiny batteries; allows phones with big batteries.https://twitter.com/enlayt/status/844226687596445696 …

Also, UK is banning Turkey, Lebanon, Jordan, Egypt, Tunisia and Saudi Arabia. Why not Qatar, Dubai, UAE like US? Threat or not?

Again would argue for a universal ban. http://news.sky.com/story/electronic-devices-ban-on-some-uk-bound-flights-10809743 …pic.twitter.com/gFzumvxEOd

Plausibly, airline safety folks are now in a bit of panic right now at the idea of all the batteries in cargo.https://twitter.com/thatjohn/status/843923027700125696 …

AFAIK, no US airline flies direct to the banned airports. Reporting has been misleading & theories on competition need to be about transit.

There is an enormous amount of transit travel that goes through those hubs; US flights to those final destinations usually use Europe hubs.

the illogical nature of the ban suggests reason other than security. It seems economic to me
