If airline or ground crew is colluding, that is indeed a *huge* problem; this won't protect one bit though.https://twitter.com/frogjumpsin/status/844149538436743168 …

This will drastically reduce business and family travel through those airlines. People will fly through Europe hubs. https://twitter.com/cory_foy/status/844149569894211586 …

These are people on direct flights, therefore with visa or exemption to US. They thus have other options.https://twitter.com/lightlight/status/844151175964479488 …

This argues that the cargo hold (where laptops now go) is not any safer (no access).https://twitter.com/filosottile/status/844159070726770688 …

Yet to hear a convincing threat model for banning laptops only from cabin only on flights only from few countries. Dangerous=universal ban.

Anyone with a valid US visa is exempt from requiring a transit visa to fly to US through Frankfurt. Hence direct flight ban prevents what?

If the argument is that the ground staff at those airports are colluding, would then need to ban all direct flights. They'd thwart your ban.

Here's
@henryfarrell with the argument that the laptop ban is retaliation for gov't subsidies those airlines get.https://twitter.com/henryfarrell/status/844169576858505216 …zeynep tufekci added,

I've not yet seen even a flimsy argument why terrorists can't fly via Frankfurt, or why Kindle reader more dangerous than Iphone 6S Plus...

Presumably, they think that screening is better elsewhere—but I don’t get the “checked computers are safer“ part.

They should then ban cabin laptops universally. Better screening, maybe but now different rules?

Yah, but they figure they'll get grief from Americans. Taken as a whole it doesn't make sense, which is why I'm confused.

I’d be more confused if it did make sense. Trying to apply logic to this administration is an exercise in futility.
