Hardware off switches on cameras, microphones and transmitters are good ideas. I'd pay for this.https://twitter.com/zeynep/status/840185196569874433 …

Before Snowden revelations, there was so little encryption. Now it's widespread. We should now focus on device safety: demand off switches.

@zeynep Hardware off switches are analogous to PGP. Wrong solution. Just IMO…

If you want to secure the vast majority of devices, then we need the Signal/Whatsapp equivalent. Secure enclave a start.

Well, yes and no. Secure enclave is a start but I do want off switches for device mikes and radios. (Can cover cameras).

Secure enclave does a different thing; separates stuff from kernel etc. Great. But wifi and mikes used to have switches!

Secure enclave on new MBPs locks the camera and light together. No longer “possible” to turn on camera w/o green light.

I think that’s probably the better direction. Switches are error prone and hard to use. PGP.

You just have to forget the switch once, after all. :-/

Why is a switch hard to use? No objection to secure enclave to couple light and camera in addition.

It’s hard to use because it’s easy to forget. Anything I have to remember *every time* is going to get screwed up.

I think it’s fine as an expert option, but switches have big UX downside, so IMO bad overall.
