Mass surveillance is big concern & security is often crap. But many ways of being secure. Don't let misinfo & sensationalism discourage you.
I wrote a lot about crappy device security; I strongly oppose mass or overzealus surveillance. I've been on that beat BEFORE Snowden stuff.
But media on this, esp. Wikileaks, has become a joke, it's like repeating Dr. Oz on health combined with sensationalism of late night news.
*If* that's a representative CIA cache, this leak shows: mass surveillance has been greatly hindered; they are resorting to mediocre tools.
Media should approach info security claims—especially Wikileaks ones— the way one would approach Dr. Oz. Seriously. Investigate. Don't rush.
And whatever you do, please please don't take WL framing from releases or tweets, and plop it into your stories. First IN-VES-TI-GATE. Hard.
That Samsung TV. I wouldn't trust security on anything Samsung. But it wasn't a remote exploit. CIA had to insert a spy USB INTO THE DEVICE.
Samsung TV got so much press! Look, if CIA can insert a USB into a TV in your house, they can do much else. Meanwhile, Alexa in every home.
