In the Turkey case, that's not what it means. There was a shadowy, cross-institution occasionally *armed* network conducting killings, etc.

So, if people are going to call non electoral institutions stepping up leaking stuff, fine. But it is not "deep state" like in Turkey.

Oh, look, an article that gets the "deep state" stuff right, by talking to an informed Turkey expert! https://www.theatlantic.com/politics/archive/2017/02/american-deep-state-trump/516780/ …pic.twitter.com/JlYFJnyN2T

atm I find comparing divergence between electoral and non-electoral institutions to be called a "deep state" a la Turkey kinda... offensive.

It doesn't explain the Turkey version at all, though. It misdescribes it. And the coup was totally different beast.https://twitter.com/ixochitl/status/832602322589065216 …

Look, if State Dept teams up with Tony Soprano to create a "terror" attack to blame the administration for.. That's deep state a la Turkey.

THIS. Leaks are not unalloyed goods but stepped up leaks of wrongdoing to responsible journalists is not deep state.https://twitter.com/nathansnewman/status/832603732898676736 …

I will say this: expecting non-electoral institutions to carry the burden of defending against electorally-fueled wrongdoing is futile.

So, stepped up leaking is not deep state; leaks should be questioned for context and ethics; but it will always come down to elections.

Seriously, calling this US moment deep state is like referring to being a bit underpaid as slavery. It's offensive. https://twitter.com/dlepeska/status/832605846987235329 …

Yeah, catchy two-word phrases do well with Twitter threaders (I'm one!) but it feels wrong and offensive, honestly.https://twitter.com/jessespector/status/832606393593188353 …
