Ads won't pay for the kind of public sphere, media, writing or investigative journalism we need. They barely did, kinda—for a short time.
That above is right: link-bait has given way to click-bait to slide shows to fake news what-have-you. Current model is profoundly unhealthy.
It's either dirt-cheap and useless ads (that everyone cheats on) or deep and invasive surveillance (a la FB) to target you. Often both.
I know everyone argues people won't pay to read. But you know how hard it is to pay? Or when the payment is $19 per week? (absurd).
Either readers will directly finance creative and/or investigative output, or we will have more of the current deterioration.
Don't be fooled by seeming successes. NYT does not scale. WaPo's model shift has been accompanied by major errors and destructive clickbait.
For the moment, Buzzfeed subsidizes some great journalism, too. That's also not a models that can scale. We either pay for stuff or it dies.
of course, we ARE paying, every time we buy a coke. Nothing is free, we've just hidden the costs and created perverse incentives.
