Problem with the "archduke" comparison is that the likely effect of this is in the opposite direction of that one. And pretty obviously so.

American seem to picture Archduke Ferdinand as a minor dignitary, rather than the heir to empire spanning 9 present-day countries.

yep. I didn't realize he was the heir to austria-hungary myself until a couple years ago. WW1 gets short shrift in US

Yeah; point is after WWI, the whole thing unraveled, so people think in terms of after the unraveling.
