Expectation that people will be content with a small UBI stipend & no work while a segment accumulates wealth? Nope.https://twitter.com/AWorthierClock/status/806967898543628288 …
zeynep tufekci added,
I support a good safety net. But you can't replace meaning, structure & schedule with a small UBI stipend—unless importing humans from Mars.

If you had work (much shorter hours)+decent pay+less inequality, that can emerge. Good work & pay—not small pay-off.https://twitter.com/meelar/status/806973025702866944 …
zeynep tufekci added,
would never happen, but how about subsidizing shorter hours (which employers resist) in lieu of UBI?
I think that would be great! Would help a lot of people, free up more jobs. UBI as safety net is fine, too.
But I think some have this idea that we can avoid addressing vast inequality and most people be fine anyway. Not human people.
Yes, people need income and purpose, and the two have been connected so long for so many you can't just instantly unwire it.
First steps I'd want are: much shorter hours; better pay for care jobs (that can't/shouldn't be automated) & less inequality.
...eg, the socialized thing, that I think Hanna Rosin(?) wrote about, of men resisting "pink collar work." Interesting/scary subject
Men may resist some versions, but there are others. Mentoring; teaching; infrastructure, etc.
