Only a third of has college degrees; all income gains go to college-educated—and self-driving trucks are rolling out. Why is anyone worried? https://twitter.com/DKThomp/status/806497118563270656 …

Even the most far-out answer—minimal "basic income"—is nowhere near a solution. Will just free up people's time to gather up the pitchforks.

Almost everyone born in 1940s made more than their parents. Born in the 80s? Only 50%. Midwestern states? Norm is to make less than parents.pic.twitter.com/Y249i0eGlx

And the problem isn't lack of growth. GDP growth is doing fine. It's inequality. Gains are going to the well-off. Very straightforward.

Here's the article. If we went back to pre-1970 level of inequality, the problem goes away. That's it. http://www.nytimes.com/2016/12/08/opinion/the-american-dream-quantified-at-last.html …pic.twitter.com/SUn1eyIU65

or… to be creative? Why would people necessarily reach for pitchforks? Lack of upward mobility? Lack of meaningful work?

I support a good safety net. But you can't replace meaning, structure & schedule with a small UBI stipend—unless importing humans from Mars.

If you had work (much shorter hours)+decent pay+less inequality, that can emerge. Good work & pay—not small pay-off.https://twitter.com/meelar/status/806973025702866944 …

But those things don't need to come from paid employment ethr. Why not from things like volunteer work, arts, socializing, etc?

would never happen, but how about subsidizing shorter hours (which employers resist) in lieu of UBI?

I think that would be great! Would help a lot of people, free up more jobs. UBI as safety net is fine, too.

But I think some have this idea that we can avoid addressing vast inequality and most people be fine anyway. Not human people.

Yes, people need income and purpose, and the two have been connected so long for so many you can't just instantly unwire it.
