Other disagreement: I think correct theory here is not "media effects." Facebook isn't media: it's peer socialization. Why it's potent.

Despite disagreement on FB effect, I absolutely agree with @mysocnet and @eszter on this: don't make it a mono-causal lazy explanation!

Here's the piece I wrote on this *before* the election. FB must do better but "fake news" thrives on our weaknesses. http://www.nytimes.com/2016/09/13/opinion/campaign-stops/did-you-hear-the-latest-about-hillary.html …pic.twitter.com/OTRduxScxo

Stuff on TV, no personal connection: "Media", weak. Stuff flows/reinforced via social ties: "Socialization", potent.https://twitter.com/afertig/status/802181782569385984 …

I'm not clear on how "peer socialization" distinct from "media" – just different form of media? Or as some may say "it's all text."

Hey, btw, I think a lot on Facebook & social media effects—but the topic now threatens to overshadow other crucial topics re:this election.

Fake news lists wrong focus. Key is this ecology of demand & incentives: Facebook & Google ads + Facebook algorithm. http://www.nytimes.com/2016/11/25/world/europe/fake-news-donald-trump-hillary-clinton-georgia.html …pic.twitter.com/Xm9h8qYPsA

Wrangling over which exact shady site is fake news isn't even arguing over the symptom. This isn't the 20th century. Mechanisms, not lists.

Here's actual data from Germany. News sites get about 10-20% of readers from Facebook. https://medium.com/@twone2/trafficleaks-3e288c53020c#.3vy7w9b0z …
