As I argued, that's what Wikileaks did: dropped emails like candy from a pinata in front of news outlets who can't resist.
I don't disagree some of it was news, but most of it was truly trivia or only of interest to historians; meanwhile ELECTION.
i think the hard thing is if you take a pass, FOMO. And taking a pass could be considered an act of partisan judgment.
That's what getting played systemically looks like. Drip drip juicy stuff playing to process weakness—meanwhile, the ball!
seems like the FOMO angle is where there's a lot of wiggle room for improvement.
Technically, there was no reason for trickle release from WL except to play to media weakness. Look, it's new!
maybe a dumb question but do competing media orgs ever discuss w each other the need to be more savvy about this?
One hopes. They needed a pool reporting style on this, one that realized they were being played.
Or, compete on stories that deserved attention. But WL gave easy, lazy, non-stop copy. Candy to sweet-tooth.
You aren't wrong, @zeynep. The old tyranny of column inches to fill + newer one of being first on internet. /@LibyaLiberty @blakehounshell
