Did Castro dupe the New York Times? On many levels, yes. Did he dupe them in the particular brilliant, dramatic way he claimed? Maybe not!
When I shared the story of Castro and the New York Times correspondent, I didn't call it "fake news". But many who re-shared it did.
The story of Castro how tricked the representative of an influential newspaper may partly true, or just completely his propaganda.
errors, being duped, being played etc. are all very real issues; when people say "fake news" now, that's not what they mean.
Weak whataboutism. Trad media has many failings. Fake news as talked about now, relying on social media, virality is different.
