Great on economic & viral infrastructure on Facebook. Letting fake news thrive pushes everyone else to to be worse. https://www.buzzfeed.com/craigsilverman/conservative-page-owners-in-fake-news-panic …pic.twitter.com/N7aIEG2qeN

Read this thread. We always had disinformation. Did we ever have the channel so unified, mechanisms so amplified? https://twitter.com/chris_arnade/status/800901814816309248 …

I've listened to talk radio etc. for years. Last 5-6 months was.. something else. Pls don't say "nothing new" if you didn't follow recently.

Nothing is mono-causal. There is no such claim to knock down. People should pay attention to this ecology's effects. https://twitter.com/canitti/status/801058782663049216 …
zeynep tufekci added,
"It wasn't just Facebook." Of course not. "It has antecedents, history." Yes—otherwise it wouldn't work. "It's more complex." Everything is.
People made atrocious stuff up for ad $$ or ideology and reached much of the electorate every day through social contacts. Not. Talk. Radio.
People cite "media effects" research. This isn't that. This doesn't work like TV ads. It's socialization—the most powerful shaper of humans.

Media flunks this. But they don't reach this group & media has weak effects. Socialization—Facebook—has big effects. https://twitter.com/canitti/status/801060533935874049 …

Great investigation of how Facebook deliberately engineered itself so it amplifies misinformation & echo chambers. https://www.buzzfeed.com/alexkantrowitz/2016-election-blew-up-in-facebooks-face …pic.twitter.com/BV6Ho3el0M
Reporters still looking at this: overlooked, significant story is how Facebook's ad targeting facilities play into this. I think a big deal.
Yep. Misinformation on social media long had dangerous impacts in other countries; people had been pleading. http://www.nytimes.com/2016/11/18/technology/fake-news-on-facebook-in-foreign-elections-thats-not-new.html …pic.twitter.com/GGc2cT4lR0
it happened in our very first democratic elections here in Tunisia and nobody cared (it was for constitutional assembly!!)..
