Conspiracy theories are an ancient problem. They're our narrative machine going awry, fueled by mistrust, manipulated by the powerful.
They've always been with us. See the "Paranoid Style in American Politics." But now, we have the birther-in-chief as the Republican nominee.

There has been a multi-decade assault on (yes, imperfect) institutions that guard & advocate for facts. Journalism, higher-education, CDC...
Conspiracy theories have lately been outbursts of racism—Obama "birthers" or even misogyny. But that's not their only form.
Sometimes, they've been like a cancer on the urge to challenge power—impulse gone awry. They are also often manipulated by the powerful.
It's a really tough challenge. Conspiracy theories feed on mistrust, and grow it. And, yes, they thrive on social media.
All this to say, conspiracy theory elections may well continue after 2016. Would take multi-thronged, decades-long fight to get some sanity.
