..I also rely on academics & journalists who do the research + investigation, really need more people. My own research covers only so much.
It's gotten a little better; there is a "tech press" outside the gadget review press, but it should be a major beat at all serious outlets.
Tech/policy intersection needs: understanding of technology; understanding of society, power and politics; and investigative/research chops.
On the plus side: critical, investigative stories about technology do get read. There is real hunger out there; people want to understand.
It's one of the most concrete changes that people lived through in mere decades. Good (and real) tech journalism/writing has an audience.
It's only going to get more consequential. Software/tech is no longer just communication; it's decision-making and control at every level.
Anyway—besides the particulars of the Gawker story, I hope we see tech/society focused beats in regular publications, and focused pubs, too.
