Good question, especially since the intellectual property here goes back to tax-payer funded public work, as it often does. Classic.

Is this particular case an IP issue? It's not clear from your link.

Epipen goes back to gov-developed tech, take windfall, turn into marketing. 6X increase in price on already massive profit. ugh

You think their current pricing power is that strong just due to marketing though? Seems unlikely.

Combined. Lack of competition, partially driven by marketing. Long history but—Epipen is basically eponymous for this product.

Lot of eponymous products in the world. But very rare to see 6X pricing power.

"How much is your kid's life worth" logic; plus prescription-only and marketing is to doctors/pharmacies. Hope backlash will impact.

But surely the people choosing not to buy at all would have bought a low cost option. Why doesn't that exist?

Prescription-only. There is a very low cost option (fill own syringe) but can't see parents risking that—1 mistake, 5 min, dead kid.

But why isn't there a better low cost option? Another company selling an identical product with a different brand name.

Prescription-only; massive marketing to doctors; until recently $100, patent lawsuits and more to the story. https://www.reddit.com/r/news/comments/4y5481/cost_of_epipen_continues_to_rise_putting_burden/ …
