How the Tea Party base merged "government for me" and "instead of them—minorities" is why race and "economic anxiety" are NOT opposites.
I've long been tweeting pointers to recent research. But this goes back to Wallace, etc. http://www.bostonglobe.com/opinion/2016/03/19/the-genealogy-american-demagoguery/cw60dgR9k3x9BRdOt0L1PP/story.html …pic.twitter.com/sEctmvcx9b
Of course, Tea Party had libertarians & some "small government" conservatives. But research showed "make government work for me" as crucial.
See below. My experience: many such ppl (wrongly) think gov't helps immigrants & minorites. http://www.huffingtonpost.com/entry/philadelphia-people-voting-for-trump_us_57a23b2ee4b0104052a0e3ae …pic.twitter.com/XIwGzLrgeo
So their story on why they are so left behind is often very much mixed with race. Because this is America. Everything is mixed with race.
No, 2016 isn't 1933. It's still terribly dangerous for a political vacuum for "populism" to be filled with the ethno-supremacist version.
By the way, @tanehisicoates argument linking "plunder" and racism is another way of saying "race" and "economy" aren't two distinct topics.
Not an ounce of "excusing" racism in discussing how objective and subjective (sense of) resource allocation and race are integrated.
Obviously, no need to *reduce* race issues to econ issues, or vice versa. But "only this" or "only that" analysis not capturing full story.
